Behind every good Hazardman

Yep I think you know this one…. is Safety Woman! So this is another Character from WorkSafe Acts Hazard Man comic. I must say I am a fan of hazard woman. She does appear to make some sense. This is one of her messages

"Workplace safety isn’t really about work. It’s about everything you do when you’re not at work. It’s about time with your friends and family, hobbies, holidays, having fun and everything that’s important to you. Because that is what you could miss out on if something goes awfully wrong. So don’t miss out. It’s easy to stay safe if you know what hazards to look out for, and how to fix them."

Do you agree? Have you got a safety tip to share?

The NSW Mine Trade & Investment Mine Safety Investigation Unit have release information regarding a gas well incident on a decommissioned gas well earlier this year. While no workers were injured the incident sure had potential to cause serious injuries.

Below you will also find a copy of the original safety alert issued the recommendations for decommissioning wells include
  • A suspended well should be left with a kill string to facilitate conventional killing of the well as well as to enable isolation of the reservoir from surface when installing a BOP stack.

Have you met Hazardman?

Have you? I have been in this profession a few years now and I am yet to meet Hazardman! Apparently he is an ordinary Safety Officer turned Superhero? In light of his I will be interviewing all my fellow professionals to be sure to track him down he may be hiding amongst them!

Seriously this is a work safe initiative offered to high school kids and young workers in the ACT. They are running a competition for school kids to design a new character for the comic. Hazardman evolves from a child who has suffered the loss of a parent in a workplace accident, something no child should go through (unfortunately too many already have!). While its a great story I am not sure how it will be accepted by school kids and young workers but it would be interesting to get their take on it.

There are some decent fact sheets on different topics like the manual handling one I have linked below. Let me know what you think.

You can also check out the Custom Safety Resources page for other great links.

If you are thinking about renovating your home this video is a must watch!

It is estimated that 1/3 of older Australian homes built or renovated before 1987 contain asbestos, renovators must undertake adequate preventive measures to ensure their families are protected.

Safework Australian reported that in 2007, 660 Australians were diagnosed with malignant mesothelioma and experts estimated that could be at least another 1,350 Australians with lung cancer caused by asbestos.
Last week I posted some links on asbestos awareness Asbestos Awareness Month (November), check it out for some useful links on asbestos!

Asbestos Awareness Month (November)

November is asbestos awareness month. Here is a couple of facts on Asbestos from www.asbestosawareness.com.au:
  • There is NO safe level of exposure to asbestos fibres!
  • Breathing in dust containing asbestos fibres can cause asbestosis, lung cancer and mesothelioma.
  • Wear the right PPE and follow safety precautions when removing or working with asbestos, otherwise you risk exposing yourself and your family to long-term health risks.

Asbestos was commonly used in brakes clutches and gaskets, cement sheeting (fibro), drainage and flue pipes, roofing, guttering and flexible building boards (eg Villaboard, Hardiflex, etc). Similar cement sheeting products are used today, but are 'asbestos free'.

You might also find some handy links regarding asbestos on http://www.workcover.nsw.gov.au or http://www.health.nsw.gov.au.

If you think you have asbestos in your workplace or home dont risk it use a license contractor to remove it! There are companies like Hazmat Services who can help you safely remove asbestos.
